Velva Sheen's small-batch, exclusive "Made in Japan" line focuses on time-intensive heritage weaving techniques. These half-zip loopwheeler sweats are a perfect example of form and function.

Description:  On most sweats, you will find seams on the side body or down the back of the arms where the fleece was stitched together. Loopwheel sweats are woven on a cylindrical loom to eliminate those, creating a more durable, longer-lasting garment. It was the main way sweats and t-shirts were made until the 1950s, but faster, cheaper manufacturing virtually eliminated these machines -- there are only about 200 loopwheel machines left in the world. These loopwheel half-zips are part of Velva Sheen's premier "Made in Japan" line.

About Velva Sheen: Velva Sheen began operation in 1932 in Cincinnati, OH. Over the years they manufactured t-shirts and undershirts for the military and specialized in collegiatewear, but the 1990s brought financial hardship to the company, and the company's operations came to a halt.

In 2009 Velva-Sheen found a new champion in a small Japanese design firm who had known and loved the brand in its heyday. They got involved with the goal of bringing the brand back to life, and moved manufacturing operations to Los Angeles, one of the few regions where sportswear manufacturing continued to thrive in the USA.
